Book Release: “Guaranteeing America’s Security in the Twenty-First Century”

Ahead of the December 7 anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, EWI Chief Operating Officer Dr. William J. Parker III has released his newest book “Guaranteeing America’s Security in the Twenty-First Century”—a guide for how the United States can organize, equip and prepare its disparate security institutions to address future national security concerns.

A compilation of critical analyses from senior U.S. military and interagency leaders, the book is “clear-eyed in its assessment of the difficulty of the challenges we must overcome and the recommendations it offers are more than mere palliative measures,” notes Admiral James Stavridis, former Commander of the U.S. European Command and NATO's 16th Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

Stavridis, who provided the foreword, commends that this book “is not merely a result of academic analysis, it has been influenced by the authors’ own direct knowledge of challenges faced, and overcome, in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, the Horn of Africa, and elsewhere.”

In separate chapters, “Guaranteeing America’s Security in the Twenty-First Century” assesses the daunting task of implementing effective interagency national security policy through bite-sized portions of area-specific concepts. The contributors bring to the table over 150 years of operational experience, more than 50 worldwide deployments, seven Bronze Stars, four doctorates, and over 50 published articles and books.

Dr. Parker is a retired senior U.S. naval officer, having served for 27 years. During his career, he commanded warships, undertook multiple combat tours, served as Chief of Staff for the U.S. Naval Forces and was a senior strategist with U.S. embassies in Iraq and Pakistan. Dr. Parker holds a PhD from George Masons University’s department of molecular and microbiology and MA from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

“Guaranteeing America’s Security in the Twenty-First Century” follows up Dr. Parker’s 2008 publication “Jihadist Strategic Communication”—the first book ever on the new topic of strategic communication and how Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri attempted to win the hearts and minds of the world through fear, religion, or admiration.
