Michael Chertoff Speaks Out Against Backdoored Encryption

News | July 29, 2015

EWI Board Member and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff spoke out against backdoored encryption at the 2015 Aspen Security Forum.

“I think that it’s a mistake to require companies that are making hardware and software to build a duplicate key or a backdoor, even if you hedge it with the notion that there’s going to be a court order,” Chertoff remarked.

Chertoff said weakening encryption would increase the vulnerabilities for ordinary users, force “bad people” into using technology that would be even harder to decrypt, and could become a strategic vulnerability for the United States, especially if Russia and China demanded backdoor access.
