Nina Khrushcheva sits down with Cameron Munter to discuss her latest book In Putin’s Footsteps: Searching for the Soul of an Empire Across Russia’s Eleven Time Zones—an exploration of modern-day Russia.

"On the global stage, Putin certainly showed what Russia can do—negative, positive," says Khrushcheva. "In fact, for the Russians, even the negative becomes a positive because Russia is important, whichever way."

Nina Khrushcheva is a professor of international affairs at New School University and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She is the author of The Lost Khrushchev: A Journey into the Gulag of the Russian Mind and Imagining Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics, and her works have also been published in Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Financial Times.
