John J. Roberts is a senior advisor to AIG, where he is involved with the company’s activities in the NIS and CEE.

The IREX Governing Board recently appointed Roberts to serve as its chair beginning July 1998. A member of the board since 1993, Roberts brings to his new position a vast amount of international corporate experience. For more than 50 years, Roberts has been with American International Group, Inc. (AIG), an international insurance and financial services company, and has held executive positions both overseas and in the United States. Before becoming a senior advisor he served from 1989 to 1997 as AIG’s vice chairman of external affairs.

In addition to his work at AIG and with IREX, Roberts is also active in a number of other academic and international organizations. He serves as a director of the Institute of EastWest Studies and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Council on Ethnic Accord, the US-Russia Business Council, and the Bretton Woods Committee. Roberts is a member of the US-EU Poland Action Commission and the U.S.-Romania Action Commission of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also a trustee of the Starr Foundation, the Julliard School, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and is former chair of the Corporate Council and current member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs. Roberts was born in Montreal, Canada, and holds a B.A. from Princeton University (1945).
