On September 10, 2018, Ambassador Cheng Guoping, State Commissioner for Counter-Terrorism and Security Matters of China to the United States, led a delegation from the China Association for International Friendly Contact (CAIFC) to visit the EastWest Institute (EWI) and to exchange views on the current state of the U.S.-China relationship. The delegation met with EWI’s President and CEO Ambassador Cameron Munter and Vice President of the Asia-Pacific program, Dr. Lora Saalman. Other EWI participants included representatives from the Asia-Pacific program: Farwa Aamer, Zoe Leung, Natalie Pretzer-Lin and Jace White. The discussion focused on current challenges in U.S.-China relations and opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

Since 2008, EWI has partnered with CAIFC on the U.S.-China Sanya Initiative, which regularly brings together retired American and Chinese generals and admirals with an eye toward building stronger military-to-military ties between the United States and China.
