EWI Hosts Comprehensive Discussion on Japan and the Indo-Pacific

News | January 31, 2019

On January 29, the EastWest Institute hosted the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) and Jonathan Miller—senior visiting fellow with the Japan Institute of International Affairs and distinguished fellow with the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada—for a discussion on Japan’s role in the Indo-Pacific and the current state of the U.S.-Japan alliance.

The briefing happened at an important juncture in U.S.-Japan relations, in anticipation of the second Trump-Kim summit and rounds of U.S.-Japan trade negotiations.

Miller, who is also a senior fellow with the Institute’s Asia-Pacific program, led the exchange and offered insights into Japan’s engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, commonly known as the “Quad.”
