Saalman and McConnell on Emerging Technologies and Nuclear Risk in Beijing

Dr. Lora Saalman co-organized and, together with fellow EWI Vice President Bruce McConnell, participated in a workshop on ‘Mapping the Impact of Machine Learning and Autonomy on Strategic Stability and Nuclear Risk’ on September 6-7 in Beijing, China with the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations in Beijing (CICIR) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

With a focus on doctrinal and technical dynamics in East Asia, the workshop brought together over 35 academic, diplomatic, legal, military, and technical experts from China, India, Japan, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea and the United States.

Noting the complexities of the nuclear dynamics in the region, Dr. Saalman emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the workshop that engaged in scenario-building on topics ranging from the South China Sea to the Korean Peninsula.
