Joy Mitra is a Visiting Fellow with the South Asia Program, Stimson Center in Washington D.C., where his research focuses on crisis management and deterrence stability issues. Mitra is also affiliated with Institute of Conflict Management in New Delhi, India. He specializes in decision making, bargaining analysis of actors involved in domestic and foreign events spanning politics, politico-military and conflict situations and writes on foreign policy, deterrence stability, as well as defense and security issues related to South Asia.

From 2016-2017, Mitra was affiliated with Wikistrat Geopolitical consultancy firm as a researcher where he took part in simulations and contributed analysis for its South Asia Desk. He also served as a 2015-16 South Asia Foreign Policy Fellow jointly conducted by Youth Forum for Foreign Policy and the Jindal School of International Affairs, OP Jindal Global University, Sonipat. He is also a qualified engineer and worked with multinational software consultancy firm until 2012.

His work has featured in the South Asia Terrorism Portal, South Asia Intelligence Review, Faultlines Journal, ICS Analysis, Foreign Policy Research Centre Journal, Jindal Journal of International Affairs, The Wire, South Asian Voices, The Diplomat, Centre for Land Warfare Studies Journal, Jadavpur Journal of International Affairs, Greater Kashmir, as well as Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies and Observer Research Foundation publications.

Mitra holds a master’s degree in Diplomacy, Business and Law from the Jindal School of International Affairs, with a thesis on “Deploying Game Theory in Analysing the Conflict in Afghanistan-Pakistan Bilateral Relations.”
